3 days in the footsteps of Martin Luther

Martin Luther – this name is inextricably linked to Saxony-Anhalt. Saxony-Anhalt was Luther’s home and is the cradle of the Reformation. Martin Luther was born here, he lived here, the great reformer died here. The ideas of the Reformation have changed Europe and found followers all over the world. Luther's life and work can still be explored today in the original scenes of the Reformation. Whether in Lutherstadt Eisleben, Halle (Saale), Mansfeld-Lutherstadt or Lutherstadt Wittenberg, Luther can be experienced in Saxony-Anhalt. Get to know the most important stations of Martin Luther in his home region on this tour.

DAY 1

You travel to Lutherstadt Wittenberg and embark on a leisurely walk through the city centre with the noble wives of Lucas Cranach and Martin Luther. Barbara Cranach and Katharina von Bora have a good few amusing and interesting things to talk about. The city tour leads over the market square to the Castle Church, where Luther ushered in the Reformation in 1517 by posting his Theses. The original sites of the Reformation in Wittenberg include Melanchthon’s House and the Cranach Courts. The Panorama LUTHER 1517 is dedicated to the events in Wittenberg 500 years ago, when the monk and scholar Martin Luther published his 95 Theses on the reform of the (Catholic) church, setting in motion a dramatic movement which has shaped history and the religions of the world to this day. For the presentation of the 360-degree panorama, a rotunda was built in the old town of Wittenberg, which houses the approximately 15x75 metre large work. Unique to the panoramic project LUTHER 1517 is the combination of a panoramic artwork by Yadegar Asisi with the world event commemorating the Reformation by the Evangelical Church of Germany and the town of Lutherstadt Wittenberg. The impressive panorama can be seen in the exhibition rotunda "w360" in Lutherstadt Wittenberg.

In the afternoon of this short trip, the nearby Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz is worth a visit. Enjoy a tour through the beautiful historic park landscape or discover the garden kingdom with a gondola ride over the Wörlitz lake with coffee and cake!

DAY 2

In Halle (Saale) Luther's body was laid out for one night during its transfer to Wittenberg. The death mask and an imprint of his hands can be seen today in the crypt of the market church of “Our Lady”. The Handel Town offers cultural delights of the highest standard: You can also visit the Handel house, Giebichenstein Castle or the State Museum for Prehistory, which exhibits the famous “Nebra Sky Disk”. The school town which is part of the "Francke Foundations" with its palace-like orphanage is also worth a visit.

DAY 3

On the third day of the cultural trip, you will travel to Eisleben, where Luther was born and died. In Lutherstadt Eisleben, Luther's Birthplace and the place where the Reformer died invite you to visit. Both houses are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The interesting interactive exhibitions illuminate the beginning and the end of Martin Luther's life. In the afternoon, the trail takes us in the footsteps of Luther to Mansfeld, where he spent his childhood. In the small town in southern Harz you can visit the museum in the home of Luther's parents with its exhibition "I am a child of Mansfeld".
